Version: IPv4

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a unique identifier assigned to a device to identify it on the Internet or a local network and to enable communication between different devices. Every device connected to the Internet, be it a computer, a smartphone, a server or a router, needs an IP address in order to send and receive data.

There are two main types of IP addresses: IPv4, the older version, and IPv6, the newer version. IP addresses are assigned by Internet providers and can be either static or dynamic. A static IP address is often found in companies or institutions, while private Internet connections often have a dynamic IP address.

The IP address serves as a type of phone number for every device on the Internet, ensuring that data packets go to the correct destination.
